Studies have shown that people suffering from depression, PTSD and other mental health illnesses are 70% less likely to attempt suicide when they have a canine companion. Having a dog gives our once-homeless participants the opportunity to learn new skills, develop accountability and responsibility and enjoy companionship in a way that is safe and reassuring.
Also, nearly 17,000 dogs are euthanized each year in Colorado. MontemAra is developing a compact with multiple shelters in Colorado to receive the dogs that are "unadoptable". We will then pair these dogs with our program participants.
